The ASUC Office of Senator Talia Golshani and the Jewish Student Union of Berkeley recognize that Jewish students often need to balance their academic responsibilities with religious observances. Under UC Berkeley’s Religious Creed Policy, students are entitled to reasonable accommodations for religious observances, including absences for holidays and other practices.
While the policy guarantees exam accommodations, professors are often willing to extend consideration for other course requirements as well. Our template letter cites the policy and respectfully requests accommodations for absences, assignments, and participation.
As the policy notes, “Reasonable common sense, judgment, and the pursuit of mutual goodwill should result in the positive resolution of scheduling conflicts.” Send your accommodation letter within the first two weeks of class to give your professors and course staff time to plan.
